HISTORY
Beetlejuice the Musical premiered in Washington D.C. in 2018 and opened on Broadway, New York in 2019. Warner Brothers commissioned the 1988 film into a musical with two-time Tony Award winning director Alex Timbers. The musical’s score is provided by Eddie Perfect while esteemed choreographer Connor Gallagher led the musical staging. The production also brought in the most brilliant and creative minds including David Korins on scenic design, Tony Winner William Ivey Long on costume, Tony winner Kenneth Posner on lighting, and the esteemed Michael Curry on Puppetry.
The musical received eight Tony nominations, including Best Musicla and Best Book of a Musical. At the Outer Critics Circle Award, Beetlejuice received four nominations and won Outstanding Set Design. The musical also bagged seven nominations at the Drama Desk Awards and won Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical.

REVIEWS
The Guardian lauded the musical’s creativity in terms of delivering scenes to both Beetlejuice fans and casual viewers. “Alex Timbers marshals the madness with absolute control of pacing and tone. The oversized storyboard set (David Korins) is brash and clever, constantly shifting mood and perspective as the house churns through its owners. Some reveals are astonishing but they’re handled with such casual ease, you take them for granted. William Ivey Long’s costumes are startling and funny, and Michael Curry’s puppets are wickedly expressive.” The reviewer goes on to add, “The stage adaptation is careening, nutty and wild, and Perfect cranks the engine of its wit so assuredly he should probably get a raise.”
“A naughtier, louder take on the Tim Burton film.” – Denver Post
“Beetlejuice the Musical is a strange and entertaining spectacle,” says Rachel Weinberg Reviews. The review also mentioned that Beetlejuice fans are sure to have a field day as the musical gave more focus on the main character. “Interestingly, I think composer/lyricist Eddie Perfect and book writers Scott Brown and Anthony King have made the narrative tauter than the film — and they’ve inserted plenty of musical theater in-jokes along the way. While the title character makes sporadic appearances in the movie, the musical gives us more Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.”
The Los Angeles Times declared Beetlejuice as a gen Z hit, “Its storytelling sacrifices nostalgia for the new, specifically in ways that align with Gen Z. It’s a risk for a screen-to-stage adaptation to not cater to the same audience that applauded its source material when it debuted.” The review also praised Lydia’s performance as the character resonates so well with the younger audience. All in all, the musical occasional pivot from the original source material is much welcome by newer audiences.

Over in Denver, the Denver Post calls the Broadway version of Beetlejuice “a naughtier, louder take on the Tim Burton film.” The writer specified that the musical “smartly expands on the 1988 film with clever writing, taut performances.”
Lastly, Stage Left mentioned, “‘Beetlejuice’ is a ghoulishly good time.” The article added, “As Beetlejuice ironically remarks within the musical’s first minutes: ‘such a bold departure from the original source material.’ Thank heavens for that. ‘Beetlejuice; the musical is just that: the musical. Mr. Timbers understands his assignment, and has created a show based on a well-known property that knows exactly what it is and wants to do. With this new vision and story, setting taste aside, ‘Beetlejuice’ excels.”
“‘Beetlejuice’ is a ghoulishly good time.” – Stage Left
